Pro/ENGINEER peer-to-peer design collaboration capabilities being retired

Dear Valued Pro/ENGINEER^® Customer,

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of a change in the Pro/ENGINEER product strategy for supporting secure, peer-to-peer design collaboration capabilities enabled by Microsoft’s Groove technology and services. PTC first introduced these conferencing and collaboration capabilities in February 2003, with the release of Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire^® and packaged them as part of the Pro/ENGINEER Design Collaboration Extension (DCX). Pro/ENGINEER DCX has been sold both as a standalone and as part of the Pro/ENGINEER Flex 3C Package and included both peer-to-peer design collaboration enabled by Groove as well as Windchill^® ProjectLink^™.

Microsoft recently announced the imminent release of Groove 4.0. Unfortunately, Groove 4.0 does not include previously supported capabilities that allowed PTC to build its design conferencing capabilities to meet the needs of our customers. Microsoft also announced that it will no longer support Groove 2.5 technology or services after December 31, 2006. Groove 2.5 is the version currently embedded in Pro/ENGINEER, enabling peer-to-peer design conferencing. In addition, since the introduction of peer-to-peer design conferencing in Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire, the capabilities of desktop sharing and conferencing, such as Microsoft Live Meeting and Citrix GoToMeeting have matured into commercially viable alternatives, which do not require integration into Pro/ENGINEER.

After a diligent assessment of the Groove 4.0 capabilities, Groove product roadmap, and commercially available alternatives, PTC has decided to retire the Pro/ENGINEER peer-to-peer design collaboration capabilities, which were part of the Design Collaboration Extension, effective January 1, 2007. Due to the availability of commercially viable alternatives, PTC has no immediate plans to replace these capabilities within Pro/ENGINEER.

PTC will continue to provide telephone and Web-based Technical Support for customers using peer-to-peer design conferencing until the end of the current maintenance contract. However, we will no longer provide software updates or support peer-to-peer design conferencing issues after the cessation of Microsoft’s support for the conferencing relay servers. Customers currently using peer-to-peer design conferencing capabilities may not be able to do so after December 31, 2006. Pro/ENGINEER customers currently on maintenance can continue to download earlier Pro/ENGINEER releases available on our website, which may contain these now discontinued capabilities, but PTC will no longer support these capabilities.

The collaborative project management capabilities that were also a part of the Pro/ENGINEER Design Collaboration Extension will continue to be supported by PTC. These capabilities are included in the Pro/ENGINEER Flex3C package or can be purchased separately as Windchill ProjectLink.
